La Jolla Feels Like Home To Me

September 3, 2018

By Grace A.

During the summer of 2018, my family and I spent two weeks in La Jolla, California. My family and I have traveled to La Jolla for the past 9 summers, but this year was our first year staying for 2 weeks (we usually go for about a week).

My favorite part of my trip would have to be going to the beach every day, including surfing, swimming, boogie boarding, or just lying on the sand. We go to Windansea Beach every day and to Pacific Beach for surfing and boogie boarding. The waves at Windansea are massive (they sometimes reach 10 feet!), which is why we just swim at that beach. We surf at Pacific Beach, where the waves are much smaller. My least favorite part of the trip was leaving because La Jolla feels like home to me.

We did not do any sightseeing because we have been to La Jolla many times. However, we
hiked Torrey Pines, a hike that attracts many tourists. My family has done this hike often, and it usually ends up being around 3.5 miles. The hike ends on a black sand beach, which is a bonus because many people like to jump in the water after the tiring hike.

Something that wasn’t always fun was getting in and out of the ocean at Windansea Beach. Since the waves are so big, it is challenging to get in the water without being slammed by the waves a few times. However, once you are in the water, it is enjoyable because you can ride over the huge waves or dunk under them. Getting out of the water can also be a struggle because you never know if a wave will slam you when your back is turned.

There are so many amazing restaurants in La Jolla. However, this year, my favorite would have to be JRDN. It is located at Tower 23, which is a modern hotel on the coast of Pacific Beach (I stayed there a few years ago). At JRDN, you can get all sorts of food like seafood, sushi, and salads. The “Crunchy Roll” is one meal I have ordered there, a shrimp tempura roll that tastes super good and really fresh.

Another aspect that I love about the restaurant is that you can watch the sunset during your dinner. You could even pause your meal to go on the hotel roof deck and watch the sunset from there.

My family and I went to La Jolla for two weeks this year because we rented a house right on the coast of Windansea Beach. After our trip this year to La Jolla, my whole family is sure that we would love to live here when we are older, and it will always be a place we never want to leave. Vacations in La Jolla will always be like home and will always be a thumbs up!
